The saddest thing about Michael Jackson dying is that the whippersnappers don't remember before he got really weird.

From Our townhouse

Patio gardening's going well this year.

Rosemary, basil, sage, oregano, thyme, strawberries, cherry tomato, serrano chilis, pimentos, dill, more basil, lavender, mint, moss roses (to take up space where bugs ate Ian's radishes), mini roses in hanging basket, heirloom tomatoes and daylilies in back

I went to run errands today- Office Max because I need something at work and the state is SO BROKE I had to get my own index cards; Marshall's for good deals on baby clothes (Laura Ashley dress for six bucks) and finally to Lowes for plants, because I wanted to plant more lavender. It's stupid hot and humid out and by the time I got to Lowe's I might as well have had a sign that said "beware the sweaty preggo." People were moving out of my way. I noticed when I got home that my ass was sweaty. Gross. Maybe people looked alarmed because they thought my water broke.

I am tired. Guess I overdid it on those cranberry juices at The Borough last night. Man, I have to cut back.

I want some pizza. My goal is Mellow Mushroom. Soon.

(Or do I want pizza? Do I have free will when it comes to food anymore?)

Reading Tony Bourdain- who mentioned Alice Waters- reminds me that I am pretty annoyed that I never ate at Chez Panisse when I was out in CA. What the hell is wrong with me? The funny thing is that we'd be out there in June for our anniversary were I not inhabited by our alternate tenth anniversary gift. It's all good, though.

And yeah, I said tenth anniversary. It's in less than a month. I have almost been married for a decade. My general state of being is that I am pretty much wallowing in domestic blissed-out awesomeness. So Chez Panisse can wait.

We planted this weekend. We now have an herb bed next to our patio and it's amazing how much digging it kicked our asses. It's not big but it was full of good old NC clay and rocks. It's there, though, topsoil added, plants transferred from pots. We refilled and hung the bird feeders and had a hummingbird already today! Yay.

Now we are grilling Spiedie wings and making mashed potatoes and parsnips.

I am boring and couldn't be happier.

my sweetest friend [Apr. 28th, 2009|11:13 pm]
Every time I listen to the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" I wonder why Trent Reznor even bothered to sing it after that cover was made. In my mind it stopped being a NIN song when Cash got hold of it.

I will add that, after all this time, the only NIN album I REALLY like front to back is still Pretty Hate Machine. I wore that tape out. I'm dating myself.

ultrasound day! [Apr. 21st, 2009|02:41 pm]
I'm posting this here because I figured everyone would like to know that we are expecting a daughter! Wriggly little Iris was chilling out in there with her feet above her head!

I'm interested in seeing how this Ridley Scott Robin Hood film comes out. Looks like something that's finally not for kids or all Kevin Costner-fied.

eeeee [Apr. 14th, 2009|01:53 pm]
I found robot wall decals at Target!! Yaaay! I think we are officially going with robots and space for the nursery. We don't know the sex yet but who cares, girls can be astronauts too!

EDITED TO ADD:

For those interested, I will post our registry info and our address soon. We're at Target, Wal Mart (ugh- but hometown people have to shop there) and Amazon. I'm going to hold off till after the ultrasound and see if we add any other gender-specific things. It's early yet, but people are asking. :)

sigh [Apr. 4th, 2009|09:22 pm]
I still keep seeing people obsessing over grad school. Unless you are a doctor or a lawyer or a professor, no one cares. Seriously. They care maybe 10% of the time. Here is an article that helps build my case even further.

I love academe, really, I do, but seriously, people are so obsessive these days about their "perfect" futures and their magic bullets to success. It concerns me that people don't seem to be able to make lemonade from lemons, they want to find a magic formula and an easy ride.

I pruned my list a bit. If you're not there anymore it probably means that you don't post anything, or maybe I don't talk to you much anymore, and in that case why do you care if you can't read about my life? Just sayin. If I took you off and you're really sad about it, we can negotiate, but don't get too upset over the internets. That's sad.

In other news, I am excited about spring but not allergies. Pregnancy seems to make them worse, too. Niiiice.

I don't have much to update about these days because I don't want to bore my childfree friends with pregnancy stuff. Basically, I'm not nauseated anymore but my head and pretty much all my joints hurt.

The plus side is that I am learning to take better care of myself more and to say NO to being overextended. For me, it's a hard lesson, so something- say, oh, a baby- had to force me to do it. Other than that, it's interesting how my priorities have changed, how things that were important just aren't now, and how many things that used to be regular parts of my life are now firmly planted somewhere in a speck in my proverbial rearview mirror.

Generally, this is all a good thing. I just want to feel better on a regular basis so I can get out more. I miss my friends and I can eat real food now.

NC folks- Please support Davie's Law [Mar. 2nd, 2009|03:36 pm]
Read more here:
http://www.spcawake.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Advocacy_Alerts

This bill can help us end the outdated, inhumane practice of using gas chambers to euthanize dogs. Please read and write to the legislature. They are voting on Wednesday.

The bill is named after Davie, a puppy that was thought to have been euthanized and put in a landfill alive in a bag with dead puppies. Thankfully, someone found him and he is now a 55 pound dog. Hug your animals tight and take the time to make your voice heard.
