I still keep seeing people obsessing over grad school. Unless you are a doctor or a lawyer or a professor, no one cares. Seriously. They care maybe 10% of the time. Here is an article that helps build my case even further.

I love academe, really, I do, but seriously, people are so obsessive these days about their "perfect" futures and their magic bullets to success. It concerns me that people don't seem to be able to make lemonade from lemons, they want to find a magic formula and an easy ride.

The only reason I think grad school is possible for me is that I want to stay safe in academia for as long as possible. Hey, at least I admit it, right?

There's nothing wrong with grad school (I did it!), and now is a great time to return to school. I'm mostly talking about the people who are so, so fixated on the "right" school and the "right" time to do everything and the idea that everything will automagically be fine if they do X or Y. I see a lot of posts like that in library communities I am in and I think these people are in for a rude awakening.

There needs to be a removal of parents from the process. Seriously, as a former employee of a big 10 school I witnessed more than a few parents who made a career out of their child's (*ahem* adult) success or failure. Often times they are paying for ( 2nd or third mortgage on their McChateau and maxed out credit cards) so they want to see their "investment" double in value. They need someone to pay off that debt.

That is certainly a factor. I have friends who teach at universities who were completely shocked that parents would call them about their kids' grades when their "kids" were 21 years old.
